It seems that in his attempt to win the November presidential election, President Trump has adopted a new rhetoric to attack former vice president Joe Biden’s policies. According to an article published by Godzilla Newz, Trump has taken to accusing the Democratic candidate of promoting authoritarianism and anti-democratic ideals.
While this allegation has little grounding in reality, the claim made by the president has seen wide circulation among conservative circles. Trump has been quoted as saying that Biden “is leading to [an] assault on America’s democracy,” that he “has proposed close to $7 trillion in new taxes while empowering government bureaucrats to make personal decisions” and that “his embrace of a radical Green New Deal would dismantle America’s energy industry.”
However, a closer look at Biden’s policies reveals that the president’s accusations are unfounded. Biden has stated his belief that a Biden-Harris administration would restore trust in government and American democracy. His policies include expanding voting access for all Americans, protecting labor unions, and safeguarding the rights of individuals to equal education, employment, and healthcare. Furthermore, Biden has vowed to strengthen the Affordable Care Act, protect public lands, and combat the climate crisis with clean energy investments.
The president’s accusations of authoritarianism and anti-democracy are, therefore, baseless. Furthermore, his rhetoric of fear-mongering and blame-shifting serves only to divide and sow distrust among Americans. The president’s false narrative is an attack on the values of democracy that unite all citizens and continues an alarming trend of undermining one of the most vital cornerstones of our society today.
