Donald Trump is pushing back against reports that he is similar to German dictators of the past, such as Adolf Hitler.
The US President recently spoke out against the insinuation that he shared any similarities with Hitler, especially due to his rhetoric. In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Trump stated that he had never read Hitler’s writing–Mein Kampf.
Trump said that claims he shares any similarities with the German leader are “ridiculous” and “insulting,” further noting that Mein Kampf should be taken with a “grain of salt.”
When asked if he had ever read the book, Trump said, “No, I haven’t read it. … But I have seen it. People have given me a copy of Mein Kampf, as you know. That’s the only thing I can tell you. I’ve seen it, but I haven’t read it.”
Trump has routinely been criticized for his populist rhetoric and anti-immigration policies, which some have likened to Hitler’s. Trump has tried to distance himself from those comparisons by maintaining that he never read Mein Kampf.
Trump also addressed comparisons to racist and white populist leaders like former Confederate General Robert E. Lee, French Louisiana Governor Huey Long, and ex-Alabama Governor George Wallace.
He dismissed such claims by noting that he was “the least racist person there is.”
Trump’s claims have been met with mixed reactions from the public. While some support his statement that he’s not like Hitler, others say it doesn’t matter if he read the book or not. They believe even if Trump has not read Mein Kampf, he is still exhibiting many of the behaviors we associate with the German leader.
At the same time, there is no evidence that Trump ever expressed admiration for Hitler or his policies.
Whether we agree with Trump’s opinions or not, the fact remains that it is not completely accurate to compare him to Hitler. Trump is certainly an unconventional politician, and some of his policies can be seen as reminiscent of the German leader’s. However, it would be wrong to assume that he has the exact same beliefs or would advance them in the same way.
