The race for New York’s 16th Congressional District is heating up as Kat Brezler, a top Democrat in Westchester has announced her candidacy for the 2022 election.
Brezler, who has worked in healthcare and mental health for over 20 years, is seeking to win the Democratic primary on June 22nd, 2022, in order to challenge the incumbent, Jamaal Bowman, a progressive Democrat. Brezler is a long-time resident of Westchester and has roots in the Bronx.
In an interview with the New York Times, Brezler expressed her intention to bring a different approach to the district. “Our district needs somebody who is going to work on real, meaningful change for our community. Somebody who is going to listen and be responsive to what our constituents’ needs and concerns are,” she said.
Brezler has big plans for her potential term in office. Her main focus is on bringing affordable healthcare to the district, which she believes should be of utmost priority. Here she cites her own experience, as the daughter of a single mother whose medical insurance could barely cover her primary care visits. She wants to insure that healthy care and mental health services are accessible and affordable for all.
Brezler also believes that it important that communities of color are adequately represented in Congress. “People of color should not be underrepresented in Congress and should be looked at as equal citizens.” As a Latina, she brings a unique perspective on what her constituents need and believes that she can make an impact in the district for the better.
It is clear that Brezler is a formidable candidate for the seat, and the campaign is shaping up to be an interesting race as we move closer to the 2022 elections.
