Hunter Biden, son of former vice-president Joe Biden, has offered to testify before the House Intelligence Committee regarding his involvement in Ukraine.
This comes shortly after numerous Republican lawmakers had controversially been pushing for his testimony. It was alleged that he received payments from a Ukrainian gas company, Burisma, after his father had become vice-president.
Although the Department of Justice has investigated Hunter Biden, they did not find any evidence of his doing anything wrong. However, the shady nature of his dealings have left many questions unanswered.
In light of this, Hunter Biden has reportedly given the Intelligence Committee a sworn statement detailing his involvement with the company. He has even offered to testify publicly before the committee, although this offer may depend on the Chairwoman’s decision.
This congressional panel is preparing to investigate President Trump’s involvement in a call with the Ukrainian president, which supposedly contained a request to investigate Hunter Biden in exchange for financial aid.
It has been argued that this could be an attempt by President Trump to distract from his own foreign policy issues, or to publicly discredit his potential rival in next year’s election.
Whatever the purpose, Hunter Biden has now put himself in a position to make his case. Whether or not the House Intelligence Committee will take up his offer remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that his willingness to come forward may signal an interesting turn in the ongoing saga between the Bidens and the President.
