There is no doubt that the 2020 presidential race has already become the focus of the nation, and the Democrats have wasted no time in trying to use it to their advantage. It was only a few days after the announcement of Speaker Paul Ryan deciding to retire that the Democrats began to capitalize on it and build a narrative around the new Speaker of the House Kevin Johnson.
In an effort to rally the Democratic base in the run up to the election, the Democratic National Committee has been quick to describe Speaker Johnson as a “boogeyman” to progress in Congress. The DNC has attempted to characterize Johnson as a “power-hungry partisan” who will stop at nothing to push ahead his own agenda.
It is true that Speaker Johnson has a history of being vocal about his conservative beliefs. He has been known to make uncompromising stands on issues such as taxes, healthcare, and immigration. While many Democrats might disagree with his stances, it is unfair to paint him as an enemy of all progress. Speaker Johnson has been an important part of negotiations in the House, as evidenced by his role in the passage of the tax reform bill last year.
Moreover, it is of little surprise that the Democrats are trying to demonize Speaker Johnson. By doing so, they can emphasize their own policies and platform as being more progressive than the Republican’s. This tactic serves to further galvanize the Democratic base, while also attempting to sway undecided and moderate voters away from the Republican party.
In conclusion, the Democrats have certainly wasted no time in trying to make Speaker Johnson their enemy. It is understandable why they have done so, as it has helped build their own narrative for the 2020 elections. While Speaker Johnson definitely has his personal beliefs, it is unfair to characterize him as a boogeyman which stops progress in Congress.
