Donald Trump Seethes at Gag Order in Federal Case, While His Campaign Smiles
President Donald Trump is not known for his self-control when it comes to public statements, so it is no surprise that he is displeased with a judge’s decision to issue a gag order in a federal case, affecting the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
Late last week, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued a gag order in the case, ruling that attorneys on either side cannot make public statements on the proceedings. The judge enforced her order to “avoid trial by public media” and ensure that Manafort receives a fair trial in court.
However, the gag order has done nothing to stop the President from airing a flurry of tweets and comments, all directed toward the judge’s decision to enforce the gag order. Trump seethed during a speech this week in West Virginia by saying that he was unable to respond to the accusations made against Manafort because of the gag order.
But while the President may not be pleased about the gag order, his campaign team appears to be thrilled about it.
Some campaign team members feel that the order shields them from any further suspicion and questions regarding the ongoing case. Since information is scarce and limited, the campaign can control the flow of information to avoid any further damage.
The President’s team has already seized the opportunity to assert their innocence and distance themselves from the case. Trump’s lawyer Jay Sekulow claims that Manafort’s case is only tangentially related to the campaign and that there will be no convictions or hearings that involve the Presidential office.
The Manafort case continues to remain a mystery, with a limited number of facts known to the public. While Trump may not be happy with the gag order in the case, his campaign is content to use the ruling to their advantage.
