Joe Biden, President of the United States, denounced Hamas’ recent attack on Israeli citizens in a public statement today. “This wave of terror and violence is evil, and it’s deadly,” he said.
The President also acknowledged the innocent lives lost in the violence and asked Israelis and Palestinians to work together to reach a peaceful resolution to their longstanding conflict. He also stressed the importance of Americans being held hostage by Hamas.
“I’m gravely concerned about the welfare and safety of the Americans who are being held hostage by Hamas,” President Biden said. “We are working diligently to assuring their safety and bringing them home. This crisis highlights why it is so important for all sides to de-escalate tensions and bring an end to the violence.”
The president urged all parties to end the violent attacks, as well as to work together to create a lasting, comprehensive peace agreement between Israel and Palestinians. In this regard, the President urged the parties to use the United Nations and other avenues to help resolve the crisis.
President Biden’s statement comes a few days after warfare broke out between Hamas and Israeli forces. Several dozen Israeli civilians have been killed, and hundreds injured in the violence. The President further appeal to all parties to protect innocent civilians, both Israeli and Palestinian.
His statement also comes as the international community is put on alert against Hamas, a militant organization bent on attacking Israel with violence. Israel has since responded with airstrikes, targeting sites controlled by the militant group.
The Biden administration has long advocated for a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, in which both sides create a secure, independent state for their respective peoples. President Biden will continue to work with the international community to create a path forward in the region, which includes a lasting and comprehensive peace agreement.
